Unemployment Crisis - Urgent Action Needed
Why? Senate Republicans. After voting for the largest taxpayer funded bail out ever, 25 Republican Senators blocked passage of a short extension of benefits to workers who lost their jobs thanks to the Bush economy. What did these Senators do next? They left town to run for re-election. Seems the only jobs these guys care about is their own. We have the opportunity to fix this problem during the lame duck session. Send this email to your lawmakers in Congress telling them to extend unemployment benefits. Without an extension, struggling families will have a very unhappy holiday season. The October Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report reveals that besides the 10.1 million officially tallied unemployed, there were 6.7 million workers able and willing to work full time but who were forced to take part-time employment because of poor economic conditions. An additional 1.6 million people wanted to work and had looked for employment during the last 12 months but were unable to find jobs. When these workers are added to the official count, the “real rate” of unemployment reaches 11.8%. “Congress has the opportunity to extend unemployment benefits during the lame duck session and we strongly urge them to do so as part of a second economic stimulus package or as a stand alone bill,” said Darryl Fagin, ADA Legislative Director. “It’s crisis time for working people and it would be a catastrophic failure of leadership for Congress and the President to do nothing.” |
